Capricorn constellated through the Sea Goat straddles both the end of the year and the beginning. Harbours the solstice with all its stillness, darkness and tipping towards the Sun’s return as well heralding the beginning of the Roman calendar year. An ashen time when life feels illusive, trees are bald bare, growth is standing still, animals are largely absent, the quiet is dark in its depth. But somewhere within - below, life is kept alive, huddled to keep the warmth alive, the promise of light concentrated.
The Capricorn Cancer axis is the life line, when working with older forms of Astrology. Cancer is where life enters, where souls incarnate, Capricorn is the gateway for departure, where souls leave and return to the dark fecund space of decomposition. So Capricorn holds threshold spaces - is a threshold creature. Somewhere during Roman times the Sea Goat lost their tale, their association with the watery realms and became entirely associated with the upper half - the earthly horned capricious Goat. This lopping has skewed Capricorn’s range and archetypal dimension into an arid dead end.
Capricorn is the night sign of Saturn, able to inhabit the underworld realms and the earthly realms. With the tail re-membered Capricorn’s deeply felt, regenerative waters become essential, imperative for Capricorn’s capacity . To birth life anew, to keep the primordial waters pumping up and around and through the goat giving nurture. Without the tail Capricorn aligns with Roman ideals and values, conquering ambitious at all costs, stoic overriding of perceived obstacles either emotional, psychological or practical, strategic and hard nosed. But this only half the story with the tail in tact, sunk deep into other realms, alive to the mythic moment calls forth a wisdom of having lived through the cycle of life, initiated reaching the years end as the portal place of the solstice, when we whisper into the open to call the sun, the light, the warmth back round again to enliven life, enable it to thrive.
Like any sign that starts the season Capricorn is cardinal. From an astrological point of view cardinal signs initiate a new seasonal momentum. Cardinal earth, Capricorn’s elemental and mode composite, is to enliven the earth energies, the earth element builds, makes solid fundamental building blocks for the new season to emerge from. The dual energy of Capricorn’s potential range it to both let what has been initiated and built at the start of the year run its light life for the year , to let what needs to be decomposed, for re-aggregation meet the solstice potential. This making and unmaking , crystallisation and dissolving is Capricorn magic but all too often can become calcified and bound, overridden by fear - rigidity . That the mountain scaled , a height attained will be fallen from and all the associations with this fall being disagreeable. But with the tail in tact , alive writhing in primordial waters the cycle of rising , falling, creating, destroying becomes a yearly alchemical process - regenerative and ever emergent with fresh life and re-constitution.
Capricorn Magic is the capacity to hold harbour and issue forth this degree of composing, the full spectrum - to recognise Pan’s Eros energy alive in the birthing becoming building breaking. Cardinal is always on the move - in a different way to mutable signs but none the less dynamic. To inhabit Capricorn - the mythic sea goat - the water earth creature - the keeper of life and releaser of life is to allow this pulse its full range and creative dimension , not try to fix, fixate and hold onto everything and allow mature lived life to let go enabling more energy, more Eros, more life to emerge.
