The Reverence of Death

As October gives way to November and Libra hands the seasonal flame to Scorpio, we find ourselves swiftly being greeted by the celebration of All Hallows Eve, Halloween, Samhain and it is in the expression of this/these that we are given our first full glimpse of the energy of this month and the Tarot card associated with this time - Death.

These festivals speak of this time, a time of the celebration and reverence of death.

With Samhain we celebrate the ancestors, we do the work around ancestral wounding, we reflect on and release the past. Recognising this time as a threshold. A place between Worlds' in the wider way and in our own lives, a time of transition.

With Halloween it may not be fully appreciated that we are celebrating death but underneath (which just deepens that Scorpionic energy) it is what we are all doing. By bringing out skeletons, dressing up as ghosts, toiling potions, we are celebrating death and magic. In this time there is reverence for that which so often remains hidden or unseen in the daylight of society, for now the night is closing in. What had been cast into the shadows is not there for all to see.

The veils between the Worlds are thin, and death is the gateway, and the door of transformation.

In this season of Scorpio reflect on what you are watching, what your conversations have touched on? Are there any themes of death? Of those who are passed? Of blood even?

In my own experience I found myself just two days ago speaking with my mum about my fathers' death and then whether she wanted to be an organ donor and thinking back it fit so perfectly with the energy of this month because if we look at the broader expression of Scorpio itself (in our charts and in our lives) we see that it relates to that which is uncouth or that which is not always wanting to be confronted; Death, sex, abuse, magic, blood, drugs, sickness...

It's the underneath of society, the ominous, the decaying, the hidden, the messy.. when we think of dark clouds covering the sky and crows screeching from dead trees, that is Scorpio territory. But just because it covers the spaces of the underneath it doesn't mean that the felt experience needs to be heavy or dark or hidden from. In fact it is quite the opposite. And this is the same with Death.

When we embrace that which we fear or shed light on that which is dark we find that the power it has over us is dissolved, and the appreciation of it all is restored. As is the balance within.

The Death card in the Tarot does not come at the end of the Fools Journey of the Major Arcana, instead it speaks of transition from one form, or way of being, to another. Death reminds us to face the unknown with curiosity, courage, innocence and acceptance. There is no place for ego when that which torments us is being released, or when we are sitting at the bedside of a dying friend, or when we give ourselves over to medicinal healing, or sexual pleasure. Ego has no place in transformation. There is only reverence, the most cell-awakening respect for the processes and experiences that come for us all. That break us down to build us anew.

Like fungi death destroys the old and with it comes new life. Death is the depression that takes us to rock bottom. Death is messy and it is beautiful. For when we accept the need for transition, and we choose to walk through the door, the suffering ends and a new day, a new life is borne.

This time of the year is a chance to question how we feel about that which so often remains hidden in society, how we can choose to embrace, and not fear, death.

How we should use this time to take care of ourselves as this can be a time of ill-health, rest (death is also known as the long sleep) as this can be a time of weariness and exhaustion, make preparations for endings/change, think about what it is in your life that it is time to release - to cut away in order to invite in the new? This may be material possessions, relationships, locations, burdens?

We cannot control or prevent change but we can stand at the helm of transformation and scream into the wind "I am ready".
