What is Justice?

Libra season fittingly begins on the Autumn Equinox (21st September), the time when day and night are of equal length. Cosmic balance of light and dark is momentarily captured.

It is perhaps unsurprising then that the Tarot card for this time is JUSTICE.

Balance, justice, harmony, weighing choices... all are associated with Libra and Justice, and so are linked to this time in the annual cycle of the sun. I wonder what themes in your life emerge as September dissolves into October and the outward autumnal (in the Northern Hemisphere) colours turn from green to red.

When we look to the Justice card we are thinking about cosmic as well as human justice.

Cosmic justice is the maintenance of cosmic order, of the upholding of cosmic law, and in our own lives this is Karma and the Law of Attraction. What we do, ie the choices we make, will determine what comes back to us in our life. What is good or bad is subjective but what you put out into the World, that will come back - so if you take from others' things will be taken from you, if you give to others' things will be given to you.

It is said that Ma'at, the Egyptian Goddess of truth, justice, balance weighed the hearts of those who had passed against a feather, to see the lightness of the heart, the purity of their lives.

Human justice is found in law, order, maintaining the status quo. So this could be a time of run-ins with the law, of dealing with contracts or agreements, fleshing out business proposals or simply getting things into order.

Ma'at and Lady Justice (Greek Goddess of Justice and maintaining the cosmic order) are both featured in the Justice card and are depicted in a diverse number of ways in designer Tarot decks. As such, the figure of Justice is almost always depicted as being feminine to show the creative and harmonious force behind order. However in the Rider Waite deck I always feel the character is androgynous - again depicting the balance between light/dark, masculine/feminine, spirt/form.

Lady Justice is often shown blindfolded in order to maintain impartiality - justice should be rendered, it is said, "without passion or prejudice".

So in this Libran season of justice, order, fairness, balance what themes are emerging for you?

Remembering of course that the opposite could be at play, that you feel an injustice has been served, that balance has been disrupted, that life feels unfair. Both sides of the coin are encompassed by this time (and this sign and card) so on which side has your penny fallen?

A final collection of questions you can ask yourself as we enter October are:

What does justice mean to you?

Who do you serve?

Who are you protecting?

What do you want to put out into the World?

Are you a giver or a taker (or balanced between giving and receiving through the heart)

Your heart knows the truth.. as does Lady Justice and, in the end nothing will be hidden from the weighing scales of Ma'at ..
